The brief

Premium appliances need connectivity that feels as reliable as the hardware.

A premium appliance manufacturer needed their mobile app and connected features to work reliably for real households. Client-side Bluetooth Low Energy implementation was the bottleneck. After multi-year delivery and seven-figure spend, pairing and session management still were not stable enough for what buyers expect from a premium product.

This started to become a brand problem. No matter how good the appliance is, the product did not feel premium when connectivity was unreliable—and competitors were starting to outrun the company in the digital sector.

Clarion was brought in to redefine the connectivity layer: a shared SDK for iOS and Android, built with Kotlin Multiplatform, with connection management that meets industry expectations for production use. Clarion unblocked the product launch in just two months.

Connection management

The product feels unreliable when connectivity fails.

The problem

Premium buyers notice when an app loses the appliance, or when setup takes multiple attempts. Pairing and session management were not reliable enough for what people expect from connected hardware in their homes, and that was visible in daily use.

For a premium manufacturer, that is an optics problem as much as an engineering one. Launch and connected features stayed blocked until connection behaviour was something the company could stand behind in production.

How we solved it

We replaced the failing integration with a Kotlin Multiplatform connectivity SDK: one shared layer for iOS and Android so pairing, sessions, error handling, and recovery live in one place.

Platform-specific BLE adapters sit underneath. The app teams integrate against a single, stable API surface. Connection management follows patterns that match industry expectations for production use. That unblocked the mobile application and appliance features, and became the base that 10+ products and 4+ applications have since been built on.

Client name, product names, and performance metrics are withheld under NDA. Spend and timeline figures above reflect what the client shared with us about prior delivery; we do not publish install counts, revenue, or third-party vendor details.

How we worked through it.

  1. Step 01
    Diagnose

Map failure modes in pairing, sessions, and reconnect. Align with app and firmware teams on what “stable” has to mean in production.

  2. Step 02
    Architecture

Define the Kotlin Multiplatform module boundaries, platform adapters, and the API the mobile apps integrate against.

  3. Step 03
    Build

Implement and harden the SDK on iOS and Android in parallel, with shared logic and platform-specific BLE where it matters.

  4. Step 04
    Unblock

Ship production-ready connectivity, enable the mobile app launch, and leave a reusable base for the next connected products.
